1990 Specialized Hard Rock upgrades

Gone:

STI push push shifters
Square type bottom bracket 26-36-46
Biopace chainrings
GS200 rear derailer
HG50 cassette 13-30
original chain

New:

Alivio push pull shifters
Deore crankset with external bottom bracket 26-36-48
Alivio rear derailer
HG50 cassette 13-30 [Pretty much unchanged over two decades]
shimano chain

The STI front shifter wouldn't ratchet on the second push anymore so the big ring was off limits. The rear derailer had so much free play, it would walk down the cassette to the 13 on its own. The biopace chainrings were never great when new and they and the chain were severely worn. 21 years of use! The crank arms were also slightly loose on the square mounts and that made for inefficient pedaling.

Now it goes pretty good. Nice and smooth and all gears are available with pretty clean shifts. Sometimes going from the mid ring to the small one is a bit stubborn but only if you are cross chaining.
